We have a "jealous God."(202) Who wants us to protect and highly treasure our relationship with Him because He protects and highly treasures His relationship with us!
Years ago I wrestled with why that was so... why such a big, powerful God had to stoop to such a petty human emotion.
However, I learned what Godly jealousy really means. God is jealous over His people because He does not want to share us with influences that would compromise our ultimate welfare. God does not leave His children vulnerable to evil. He promises that as long as we keep our focus on Him, magnifying and exalting His name (Ps. 34:3), we will be protected from distractions, or deceptive false gods, that tempt us to make poor choices. Without a steady focal point on a Holy God, we are easily seduced into compromise, lead into confusion and ensnared with hurtful habits.
